Hokusai is one of Japan’s most famous artists. While best known for his prints and picture books, Hokusai also made some paintings. This gallery shows eleven of his flower and (or) bird paintings. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Hokusai’s style is known as ukiyo-e which means pictures of the floating world. These pictures were meant to entertain viewers so artists typically did not depict their subjects in a true-to-life way.
